An element is a substance that contains only one type of atom. Elements make up everything around you. The food you eat, the air you breathe, and even your own body are made up of elements. Elements can exist as solids, liquids, or gases. All elements have different physical and chemical properties. Physical properties can be observed and measured without changing the element in any way. Chemical properties, on the other hand, can only be observed when there is some kind of chemical change to the element. Both physical and chemical properties can be used to identify and classify elements. Elements can be classified into three main types: metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
