Welcome to the University of South Florida’s FERPA Training! This training must be completed prior to receiving access to the student record information system (Banner) and degree audit system (Degree Works). All USF employees are strongly encouraged to take this training to ensure compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Nationally, there is growing concern from incoming, continuing and former students about the privacy of their personal information. Students are keenly aware of the data collection and information exchange that occurs at institutions of higher learning. Transmission of personal data to vast numbers of recipients can occur easily in both printed and electronic media. The federal government understands the need of students to have some control over the disclosure of information from their education record. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, otherwise known as FERPA, students may limit disclosure, except in situations where release is required by law. The responsibility for administering FERPA has been assigned to the Student Privacy Policy Office within the U.S. Department of Education. Educational institutions are required to develop policies for enforcing FERPA. At the University of South Florida, the University Registrar has been delegated the responsibility to ensure that information from educational records is released only to those individuals and agencies that have a legitimate educational interest or have been granted legally authorized access. However, you also play an important role in the privacy and security of students’ records. Identity theft, credentials fraud, and other illegal activities have heightened sensibilities and now place a responsibility on all of us to ensure that student data is used only for intended purposes. USF considers the security and privacy of student records an important priority. The purpose of this training is to ensure that USF employees who have access to student record information increase their awareness of FERPA as well as their responsibilities to protect University data. Therefore, your completion of this tutorial and the quiz that follows is an important step in safeguarding student data and strengthening the trust of our students.
