It is clear that if we want to argue that horror is a genre that is not spe-cic to cinema, novels, paintings, or other representational arts, then we cannot focus only on ctional representations of mon-sters designed to elicit fear and disgust.
In the rst part of the paper, I discuss Noël Carroll’s inuential theory, according to which hor-ror is understood as a genre that essentially involves works designed to elicit a specic emotional reaction through specic entities (i.e., supernatural monsters).
