Universal healthcare is a healthcare system that ensures all people have access to the necessary health services that is both effective and does not put the individual at financial hardship (World Health Organization (WHO), 2019). There are 5 characteristics that are essential for a strong healthcare system, these are explained briefly.
The first is availability, this means the country has the facilities and technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. It should also have a person-centred care approach to its healthcare by putting the patient at its core.
A health system should also give environment- responsive actions to address social determinants such as education, living conditions and income, these all affect an individual’s health and access to services
A country must also be well resourced, this includes a sufficient capacity of well trained, educated and motivated health workers that give healthcare based on the best available evidence (WHO, 2019) (GT Media Group Ltd, 2019).
